I agree with the oil companies statement. People just buy the oil stocks when the oil price goes up and sell when the oil price goes down (almost regardless of what happens to the companies). Stocks like Exxon Mobil (XOM) is especially like this. So buy XOM if you are bullish on oil prices, and don't buy if you are bearish.

I like your picks. I think limeade is right that if you're interested in pursuing this line of investing further, that's a good basis for some additional homework - with, of course, the objective of buying a share or two of the companies that still look like winners after that.

I like your idea of easing into picking your own stocks by using maybe 5% of your portfolio. You've also got a great start by identifying companies that you like. Now that you've got a list of companies, it's time to check out their financials (balance sheet, incomse statement, and cash flow statement). You might surprise yourself and find that you enjoy looking into individual companies.

I was surprised to see that Radio Shack was not one of your top five picks. I like Halliburton alot. Since Bush and Cheney have been in office for eight years next year, I think they have set that company on the right track for centuries to come. What about Exxon Mobil and other oil companies? They seem to be raking in billions in profits every few months.
